The proposed AFNOR Standard on Halal is rejected at the international level
In a letter on November 1st, the General Secretariat of SMIIC (The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries) informed the General Director of AFNOR (The French Association for Normalization) that it has received several letters of concern from Muslim community organizations in Europe regarding the issuance of an experimental standard on halal (XPV06-001) by AFNOR.
The SMIIC letter in particular emphasizes that halal standards should not be considered as technical standards only and that the lack of Muslim religious experts’ participation in the standardization process will cause serious negative reactions from the community and that from the point of view of a standardization process, it is also not a good practice.
ASIDCOM concurs with the letter from SMIIC, which confirms that there is greater and more widespread Muslim opposition to the interference by AFNOR with Muslim worship matters.
